Bilgola Bespoke (formerly Mrljak Architect Builder) was founded by director, Johnny Mrljak, in 2016 on the core principle of creating innovative, considered, and engaging designs coupled with impeccable craftsmanship. Underpinning this principle was his detailed knowledge, examination, and interpretation of the Australian native landscape as experienced both in rural and urban contexts. Based on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, Johnny is a registered Architect and licensed Residential Builder and has worked on numerous award-winning projects throughout Sydney since 2010. With extensive hands-on building experience dating back to the mid-1990’s, the roots of his design and construction experience are firmly grounded in his love of how materials are crafted and interact with each other and is evident in his earlier years as a fine woodworker and luthier. Johnny works with numerous dedicated craftspeople to deliver beautiful bespoke details on all his projects. He himself a maker, dons the tool belt on all jobs and hand-makes and assembles virtually all custom timber and steel building elements, from all structural framing to one-off steel and timber pieces like staircases and joinery elements. Prior to his formal venture into architecture, Johnny commissioned many custom Australian and exotic timber furniture pieces and other building elements such as staircases to numerous discerning clients. Throughout his formal architectural and construction education, Johnny was involved in and led the design, documentation, and hands-on construction of numerous award winning residential projects throughout Sydney.
