Drift House
Drift House is a carefully crafted response to the evolving needs of its owners - a growing family requiring additional space, enhanced natural light, and a seamless connection to their outdoor environment. The design balances solidity and lightness, elevating the new structure above the landscape to meet regulatory flood requirements while fostering a sense of openness and connection to nature.
The project involved the demolition of the rear half of the existing home and the construction of a completely new extension from the ground up. The new addition includes a larger kitchen, living, and dining area, along with a new master bathroom with separate laundry, and a home office overlooking the backyard and new swimming pool. External works featured a new swimming pool and landscaping, a pergola and BBQ area, and a bathroom attached to the existing rear lane garage.
The 5.5m-high vaulted ceiling in the kitchen, living, and dining space was a key client request, enhancing the sense of volume, openness, and natural light. Large expanses of glass invite the outdoors in, while the angular, folded form of the building directs light and views, reinforcing a connection to the garden and sky.
